Nongovernmental organisation LGBT Forum Progress, as a part of the project “Standing together – enhancement of the protection of the victims of violence”, which is being implemented in partnership with the Center for Women’s Rights, supported by the Embassy of the United states of America in Podgorica, continues with the activities of monitoring hate speech and verbal violence towards the members of the LGBTIQ community in Montenegro.
The Team for the monitoring of hate speech and verbal violence on the internet, has registered and reported 39 individuals within the past two months, which have threatened the LGBTIQ persons with violence. These reports include qualifying LGBTIQ persons as sick, death threats as well as threatening with different forms of violence.
“It is noticeable that the activities of the individuals who have the tendency of writing threatening messages intended to the LGBTIQ community is increased in the periods of the increased media activities covering the LGBTIQ topics. Therefore, along with the fact that the media representation of the LGBTIQ movement as a result have the starting of a discussion on the topic itself, we also witness the identification of the comments and cases where the LGBTIQ community is being treated in a discriminatory manner. What is especially worrying, is the increase of the comments on the media portals and social networks which are related to the summoning of Nazism and Fascism as examples on how to treat the LGBTIQ community. Statistically observed, the perpetrators of these deeds are mostly men, an overall 31 case, while women have been registered as perpetrators in 8 out of 39 cases“, as stated by the Team for the monitoring of hate speech and verbal violence on the internet.
Besides the cases related to the LGBTIQ community, the Team for the monitoring of hate speech and verbal violence on the internet of LGBT Forum Progress has reported several cases directed to the RAE population, two cases of discriminatory comments directed towards Serbs as a national minority, as well as two cases of corruption within the education system.
LGBT Forum Progress, through the actions of the Team, will continue with the monitoring of hate speech and verbal violence on the internet, as well as all of the cases of violence, hate crimes, hate speech and discrimination of LGBTIQ persons, and reporting of these cases to the official institutions. LGBT Forum Progress invites all persons who have experienced these types of violence, or witnessed one, to reach out for support and help to the Team for the monitoring of hate speech and verbal violence on the internet through email: [email protected] or through the profiles of LGBT Forum Progress on social networks (FB: @lgbtforumprogres; TW: @lgbtfp).
